People of all ages like stories. I think a way to do that is to engage students in stories written in English. The stories could be of any level depending upon the level of the students you are teaching. For instance, short stories that are easy reads could work for younger students and interesting novels at higher levels.

Every little bit of encouragement goes a long way to "open up" a learner's mind. If a teacher will only point out mistakes and overlook achievements, students will get discouraged. Motivation helps tremendously and students should be encouraged to go for more with every achievement.

If students start perceiving English as a language, which is beyond them due to discouragement by teachers, friends, classmates or parents, they will never be really ready to even start. It's like pouring wine in a bottle with the cork on :-)

To add, everyone likes to live up to their expectations from people around them. If you think Jane needs help with her English, recall her last achievement and bring it up, "Hey Jane, I think you did a great job on punctuation last week. I am sure you will handle the extempore discussion well too this Friday. Let me know if you need any help!"

This way, Jane would be confident that as she has already proven her abilities in English punctuation [she knows now that she can learn and can be good at it too], she can do well in other areas in the language too. Moreover her teacher expects her to do well so she must live up to that expectation.

The key to learning language skills in s foreign language such as English is to listen and read. Language immersion is the term used when referring to the method of learning a language by means of listening and reading. Speaking will follow naturally once the two are in full gear.

Great ideas, Namrata. Engaging students in searching for information is an excellent way to make learning meaningful. This can be done during a WiZiQ class.

English has to be taken beyond the dimensions of a subject. It is a medium of communication, of expressing ideas, using different tones to put forth emotions that add further meaning to words.
Land up in a country where no one speaks your language but only English: the language becomes the means of survival! Right?
The best way to present English is let your students take the lead. Give them a situation or a Role play and don't let them use any language other than English.
Even while taking up theory classes on Grammar, make up exercises using pics,Multimedia files... they'll love hunting for Prepositions or tenses in something they enjoy...

I agree that talking frequently in English will surely improvise the language.

However, to make English interesting to the students, we can ask them to see English movies of their level, watch English cartoons. Then we can discuss with them in detail about the movie. We have to give them the opportunity to talk and share the story with us. In this way, the students will find interesting to share their views about the movie or cartoon. Also, it would also help them to express well in their own words.

I believe, this idea will work and students will easily learn English and of course will find interesting too.

The idea seems to be intresting, though i feel talking frequently in english helps a lot to improvise and understand new words and meanings.
Talking in english will definitely improve your fluency level.

Thanks,
