If you're an English learner or an English teacher I'd love to hear what you think is the hardest part of learning English. Thanks in advance for your comments.

Language learners know what they need, but are too conditioned and perhaps intimidated by experiences with language teachers to demand it. Learners should be empowered to take action since it's their learning. I agree with George's statement. I believe the hardest part for language learners is to relax and allow themselves to be exposed to the language as observers and listeners. Language learners can benefit from being open to making mistakes while mimicking native speakers.

For those interested in the meaning of "edupunk" and whether it is connected to the "hippi" generation, the following 5-part videos may be of interest. You may also find that the videos are good way for English language learners to gain exposure to the English language.

I would say finding the "right" cultural aspects of language to include in assessment and instruction. In my case, many English language learners in Mexico are unlikely to ever converse with a native speaker, so it's finding the best ways to incorporate culture that is most relevant and meaningful for them. Many times this includes expressing their own culture (i.e., Mexico) through the target language (i.e., English).

I started to learn English at the University, so for me the hardest part was pronunciation. In Spanish we only have one sound for every letter of the alphabet. But the difficulty to learn English depends on, not only in age, but also in the environment in which the learner learns. With web2.0 tools and sites like wiziq it is much easier now to master the language. When I was young (eons ago) we only had computers in which you had to pierce cards to input data into the machine ¡Imagine that!

Getting past the rules and false expectations of perfection.
Getting in touch with yourself, believing in the value of your opinion, and allowing yourself to make mistakes to learn to express yourself in a foreign language. I think we are teaching everything backwards. The rules and forms should follow the function. We are inducing phobia and inhibiting the natural desire to experiment through doing and experiencing.
But I am a hopeless romantic and Edupunk revolutionary ;-)

Hi Everyone!
I think that one of the hardest part of learning English is the way students and teachers are involved in the target language, as well, they should believe that the learner is the centered of learning. Also, another hard thing is to learn/teach grammar without learning the language as part.

I think the hardest part of learning English is our fear to express ourselves in English. My students think English is hard,it's because they do not use English when communicating with others but I encourage them to at least give it a try and to keep using the second language after all there is no harm in trying.Who knows through constant practice they will be able to master it.
