Learning English: Are you on the right track ?

"I think first I need to learn some grammar before I start using English" " To me, it's first vocabulary and then some grammar and sentence building skills before I start speaking" "I make a lot of mistakes when I try to talk. I always try to remember grammar.. this makes it worse" This is a bit of what I have been hearing from my students for more than fiften years. At best, they all reflect their genuine interest in learning English. Not so good is that they all are seemingly groping in the dark. What do you think ?

I think I will always start by finding a group of people who speak the language and try and converse with them in that language. I will then look to refine my skills in language as well as grammar. But then - that is just me :)
