Government has suddenly taken this dicision without considering other major issues releted to school education....for example: in most of the private schools classes are overcrowded...teachers can not give invidual attention to the students... most of the schools can not maintain proper hygine for their students ...condition drinking water is very poor...method of teaching is also very unscientific.. stdents have to carry heavy school bag which is not healthy for them... lots of homework pressure they have to tackle....Our Government must pay attention to all these major issues.

I remember Class Xth days well. I can say that they were good for me, but I could have definitely done better (on the whole) without the anxiety of exams. Now grown up with a career, I think the 'learning' in Class Xth and before helped, not too sure about the exams. What the students really need are problem solving skills for the real world, for which we need appropriate knowledge and understanding. Do exams help do that?
Here are a few other, better ways I have experienced first hand to acquire problem solving skills or knowledge at one stage in my academic life or the other:
1. Working on a project
2. Teaching others
3. Just being curious about things
4. Brainstorming
5. Simply thinking

And none of the above activities did I do while preparing for an exam :)

I agree with Anittom'S remark that doing away with exams sounds like doing away with traffic rules to make driving all the fun.If exams are horrible it means that our teaching system, our syallabus, dedication of our teacher's etc. are responsible for it.Remove these ills and exams will no longer be horrible.

I'm with Harman on this.

I loved school for the sport but I just did enough to get by academically, pass exams, etc.

I didn't enjoy learning because I was forced to do it in a very traditional way and that carried over to going to university. I spent three years dossing, playing sport, drinking...and 'spotting' exam questions.

I had had the joy of learning stamped out of me...but I started working for myself when I was 25 and began thinking, having projects, working things out for myself and I started reading academic texts voraciously and educated myself in subjects that I would never ever have applied to study when I was younger. I have discovered the joy of learning and that it can help me in my life considerably, by following my nose, not an exam course. And what's more, I now know I will never stop wanting to learn and feel great about it.

I also agree with Harman and Jason.Generaiiy speaking exams are needed. They should be thought provoking and facinating. Our students hate not the exams but the way exams are given to them and the way they are prepared for the exams.Jason didn't like learning because of this.Education should be a facinating thing. As Harman says it should be problem solving oriented.Education means happyness. But in schools there is no happyness for them.Insted they are always frustated.

George's remark is spot on.Students must realize at least from their early teenage that only hard work pays especially in the Indian context.Learning has both the funny & tough aspects.Do away with exams sounds like doing away with traffic rules to make driving all the fun!

I don't think that removing the 10th exam is anywhere beneficial for students.
Students will simply be avoiding their studies, since they have no exam now.
Since there will be no serious study, it is going to affect the further studies also.
Most important thing, you get your position in all India after appearing the 10th exam, but now you will be knowing it after 2 more years(12th).
So... 10th board is a necessary thing.

I am a bird of the feather with Jason. However I do not necessarily agree with some who would expect all learning to be fun. Part of the whole process is to teach self discipline and courage to face tough situations. If all learning was fun then we would call it play. I want to be a teacher who is enjoyable yet challenging. I want to be the encourager who is willing to tell a student that "yes it's tough, but in this world you must overcome your shortcomings with drive and determination". I sound so tough don't I? I also hope that I would be sensitive enough to know when they need loving encouragement too.
